Rotary Youth Leadership Award 1991 - 2020
RYLA camp leadership has made the executive decision to officially cancel camp for this summer. This was not an easy decision, but agree that the safety of our students and staff is paramount.

Our plan is to be back strong with our 30th anniversary camp in 2021, as well as continuing our other programs throughout this Rotary year.

About Camp RYLA

“Strong leaders are made, not born. Leadership principles are learned, not inherited.”

Camp RYLA (Rotary Leadership Youth Award) is an annual weeklong summer camp that improves leadership skills for incoming high school seniors from across North Texas. Campers build leadership skills through cabin activities, athletic events, educational workshops, and team building exercises. Camp RYLA challenges individuals to work in teams, communicate, and build a consensus in a supportive environment where working together is key. Campers can expect to engage in an array of activities, both indoors and out.

The focus of the camp is to:

  • Provide an atmosphere where campers will experience learning situations to help develop sound values.
  • Promote an environment providing campers with insight and understanding of themselves and others as a basis for intelligent leadership.
  • Promote involvement that encourages appropriate actions based on values and ethics.
  • Encourage, though cooperative activities and group dynamics, development of leadership skills for modeling by other students.

Each Camp RYLA camper is selected and sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Rotary International District 5810 covering eight counties in North Texas.

To receive the Camp RYLA scholarship, applicants must be high school juniors who have shown leadership or educational promise in one or more areas of high school. Applicants are interviewed and selected by a Rotary Club committee to fill the 180 available spots in the annual camp.

Over the past 25 years, Camp RYLA has recruited, encouraged and supported over 4,000 students from North Texas to become better leaders. Students interested in becoming a RYLArian should contact their counselor or campus college and career coordinator for application information.

" RYLA is a place to experience...I can't tell you. Find out for yourself.

Student Information

Leadership is not learned or something you are born into. Leadership is gathering the trust and confidence of others to work for common goals. For leaders to be effective they have to learn leadership principles.

Going into your senior year is a great time to make an impact on those you leave behind in high school. Think of it as a building block to what you want to accomplish through college and through the rest of your life. Are you the one who likes to take charge and get the job done, or are you the one who has good ideas but never speaks up? Doesn't matter, Camp RYLA is for you.

Through Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award), “Leaders of Tomorrow” have a forum for teamwork, communication, and consensus building in an environment that challenges personal and team responsibilities. Through cabin activities, athletic events, educational workshops, and team building exercises you will learn to work with other leaders in your community to achieve a common goal. This annual leadership summer camp provides almost two hundred outstanding high school student leaders, opportunities to expand and hone their leadership skills in a weeklong program.

Why nominate your students for RYLA?

Quality RYLA nominations are key to the success your campus. If your students could benefit from a peer who will act as a catalyst for change and ambassador for advancement, consider carefully who the best potential candidates are, and recommend them for a Rotary Youth Leadership Award, so they might attend RYLA and help be the change they wish to see in the world. RYLA is a refining process; one that takes above-average students and pushes them to their limits, demanding excellence and compassion, character and tolerance. Students who attend RYLA come back to their schools and communities with a revived love for their peers, a new perspective for their world, and an unmatched energy for positive change. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity—give your students a chance to never be the same.

Who can be nominated?

Rotary District 5810's RYLA is for students who have just finished their junior year of high school and are about to begin their senior year. Camp takes place in the summer between those two school years.

How are nominations made?

Each Rotary Club has a unique relationship with the school districts in their area. The best place to start is by finding a Rotary Club in your area that works with the scholarship program and contacting them directly.

RYLA Foundation

The RYLA 5810 Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) charitable corporation founded in 2013 to provide support to the Camp RYLA program of Rotary International District 5810. Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) is a weeklong leadership program for high school juniors from the eight North Texas counties included in District 5810.

The mission of Camp RYLA is to provide intense, impactful leadership training for high school juniors so they can apply their improved leadership skills through service during their senior year and throughout life.

The establishment of the Foundation provides an opportunity for individuals and businesses to provide income tax deductible financial support for the many programs of Camp RYLA such as:

The Advisory Committee is a select group of campers chosen each year for a yearlong program of added leadership training in preparation for their return to camp as Assistant Counselors on the staff.

The Camp RYLA Alumni Association is an organization open to all persons who have completed Camp RYLA and are interested in staying connected and supporting the program. In addition to providing many staff members for each year’s camp they conduct a number of other programs and gatherings for alumni from all over the country and world.

RYLA Day 7 is a daylong Fall gathering of the previous summer’s campers for another day of reconnection, reflection and added training. It is an opportunity for campers to reflect on what they learned in the summer and how it has improved their leadership and outlook. They participate in group activities and have an opportunity to hear from facilitators on a variety of subjects not covered during camp.

RYLA U is a program establishing campus clubs of RYLA alumni at a number of colleges and universities. It allows students to stay connected with other RYLArians and continue their leadership training and community service.

Networking, Social and Professional Connections are available through the alumni database, an annual Alumni Association holiday gathering for fun and fellowship and mentoring by alums working in their careers.

Students attending Camp RYLA are sponsored and paid for by Rotary Clubs. The creation of RYLA 5810 Foundation allows Rotary Clubs with their own charitable foundations to disburse scholarships to Camp RYLA. Any contribution by a Rotary Club designated for specific Camp RYLA camper scholarships will be disbursed to Camp RYLA in the name of the club.

Each year Camp RYLA alumni and assistant counselors are awarded stipend scholarships in recognition of their service to the camp. Rotary Clubs and individuals, often in memory or recognition of specific club members, fund those scholarships. Those scholarships can now be funded by contributions to the foundation.

Contributions to the RYLA 5810 Foundation can be mailed to 1610 Millview, Carrollton, TX 75006.
